Kevin Mc Cabe RIP

Drumhowan GAA would like to offer it’s sympathy to Kevin Mc Cabe who passed away peacefully, in Cavan General Hospital, on Friday 17th January.

Kevin was a star of the Drumhowan senior team from the late 1950’s to the late 60’s even though for a lot of this time was living in England. On many occasions he was brought home by the club to play. Quoting from the commemorative book to mark the opening of Pairc Mhic Eoin  “A legend in his own time, now enshrined  in the folklore of Drumhowan. He had all the attributes of a really great player: speed, vision, work rate, accuracy, an unstoppable shot. Scored  many a goal from distances of 30 yards” He was part of the 1960 Junior Double winning team  and also in 1961 played in his most regular position of number 10 when Drumhowan faced Scotstown in their first ever Senior Football Championship game.  He also represented the club at senior county level in the early 60s. As part of the Gathering in 2013 he was named on Drumhowan’s best 15 of 60 years.

On his return home from England  in later years he took up resident in Tattygar not far from Blackhill football field where he resided with his wife Phylis until her death. Even though he took a keen interest in Blackhill he always reminded the neighbours it was Drumhowan he played for.

At this stage the club would like to offer it’s sympathy to his sister Ann, his brother Brendan, sister in law Kathleen, nephew Shane, sister-in-law Marie, brother-in-law Gerry, nieces, nephews and extended family.

The club will be having a guard of honour for the late Kevin on Monday morning at St. Mary’s Church, Castleblayney. Can all meet wearing the club colours outside the church at 11.30am.
