Clones full forward Darren Freeman proved the difference as Drumhowan suffered their second defeat in this round 3 Universal Graphics JFC held in St.Tiernach’s Park, Clones on Sunday 9th of August. This game was played in the somewhat unreal atmosphere of an all ticket game in the home of Ulster football with a little over a hundred supporters in the Gerry Arthur Stand.
Clones started the game brightly with Darren Freeman scoring a goal in the opening minute and this was followed shortly by a point from James Mealiff before Aiden Quinn opened Drumhowan’s account with his only score from play. Darren Freeman scored his first mark of the day before Ethan Audley got Clones’ second goal to leave Clones seven points ahead after only six minutes. From this point on Drumhowan were playing catch up and couldn’t really get into the game despite having quite a bit of possession. At the water break Clones were eight up. David Freeman hit a point to put nine in it. At this point Drumhowan were awarded a penalty but Darren Duffy’s shot hit the post and no score resulted. Scores were swapped but at half time the west Monaghan side had still a commanding eight point lead with a 2-7 to 0-5 half time score.
Darren Freeman opened the second half also, this time a point from play. Kevin Mooney kicked his second point but then Clones went further ahead with three unanswered points and by the 2nd half water break they were ten points in front. Drumhowan then applied the pressure but couldn’t narrow the gap due to some very wasteful shot choices and when Clones sub Jake Reihill scored an opportune goal due to a Drumhowan mistake the writing was definitely on the wall. With the game beyond reach Drumhowan finished brightly with four points to leave the full time score Clones 3-14 Drumhowan 0-13
