MC ELVANEY’S WASTE & RECYCLING INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Tyholland 1-15 Drumhowan 2-10
Tyholland who lost out to Doohamlet in their opening game in this year’s intermediate football championship got their championship aspirations back on track with this two points victory over Drumhowan for a result that on the other hand marks the end of Drumhowan’s interest in this year’s competition with this being their second defeat. This was a game that was in the balance all through when these sides met in Inniskeen on Friday evening last with Drumhowan holding a one point lead with just four minutes of normal time remaining after Paddy Mulligan rifled to the Tyholland net. Earlier Tyholland had been the more dominant and led by three points at the break but it took a goal by their captain Ronan McNally to turn things around and they added a late point by Paul Askin to seal the victory. Tyholland opened the scoring with a point from a free by Shane Treanor after a foul on Jamie Smith and they then went two up through Dermot Coyle. Drumhowan who had seen a couple of early chances go amiss then took the lead when Kieran Duffy found the back of the tight Holland net in the seventh minute. They Holland equalised through Karl Mooney and within the space of four minutes they added quick fire points from Dermot Coyle, Padraig Finan, Karl Mooney and Shane trainer from a 45 to open a three points lead after 12 minutes. By the end of the opening quarter Dermot Coyle had added another point to put Tyholland four in front. Drumhowan continued to find it difficult to hit the target while Shane Treanor added another point for Tyholland and 22 minutes had elapsed before Drumhowan had their first point of the game, Niall Mooney reducing the deficit to 4 at that stage. Drumhowan now enjoyed a period of dominance with Kieran Mooney hitting their second point but they then lost Kieran McElroy to a black card before David Millar added another point almost on the stroke of half-time. In stoppage time Dermot Coyle again registered for Tyholland for the final score of the first half to leave three points between them at the break on a half-time score of Tyholland 0-10, Drumhowan 1-4. On the resumption Mark McCabe reduced the deficit to 2 when he converted a free but Tyholland responded almost immediately as Ryan McKenna made a strong run from midfield to finish for a well taken point to restore Tyholland to a three points lead. A promising Drumhowan attack yield a ‘45 that was converted by David Millar and approaching the end of the third quarter the Drumhowan pressure told as they hit two points in quick succession to draw level, Tyholland 1-8, Drumhowan 0-11. Drumhowan though now suffered a severe blow when David Millar was dismissed on a straight red card with the game delicately balanced. Tyholland capitalised almost immediately for points by Paul Coyle and Dermot Coyle to open a two points lead. It was a lead though that was somewhat tenuous and with four minutes of normal time remaining Drumhowan defender Paddy Mulligan came through to rifle to the Tyholland net to restore Drumhowan to a one point lead. Drumhowan though were unable to capitalise and Tyholland responded almost immediately when Ronan McNally exploited some slack defensive work by Drumhowan to find the corner of the Tyholland net and with normal time almost up substitute Paul Askin registered Tyholland’s final score, a point, to leave them three in front going into stoppage time. In stoppage time Aiden Quinn hit the final score of the game, a point for Drumhowan to leave two between them at the finish.
