Club Volunteers of the Year Peter and Mary Duffy: When Drumhowan GAA Club was founded in the early 1950s Peter Duffy was a little boy hanging around with his big brothers Gene and Patsy who were star players in the early days of the team. Like many of his time Peter emigrated to England and spent his working life there, returning in the first decade of this century and settling down on his ancestral farm with his wife Mary a Scotstown woman and a nurse. Peter and Mary quickly became immersed in the Drumhowan community and in particular in the GAA Club and the local Community Group. Peter became caretaker of the Club grounds and dressing rooms, always on hand to arrange a key or solve a problem. Mary became the Club’s Health and Safety Officer, doubling up her duties with a similar role for the Community Group. She has been an exemplar in both roles, ensuring that all safety rules are complied with in the complex, taking on any slippage from the highest standards, working hard on various committees. Her careful management of her responsibilities and Peter’s long-term work for the GAA Club are widely recognized and appreciated in the Club and community.
