Drumhowan Crowned Champions for a 7th Time

Universal Graphics Junior Football Championship Final

Sunday 20th October 2024  in Scotstown

Drumhowan 2-8 Eire Óg 1-7

Drumhowan captured their 7th Junior Championship at a stormy Scotstown. The game was held up  due to the MFC game going to extra time so it didn’t commence to 3.55

Gerard Quinn opened the scoring with a point in the 4th minute but Eire Óg opened their account shortly afterwards with a Conor Leonard point.  At this stage  Eire Óg’s Jamie Mc Carey missed a  one on one goal chance thanks to an excellent save  from Enda duffy. In the 10th minute Eire Óg  goalkeeper James Morrow kicking a 48m free straight in front of the post.  This proved to be their last score of the 1st half.   Drumhowan continued to exert pressure  but didn’t score again till the 14th minute when Aiden Quinn  kicked his 1st point,   He followed a minute later with another, this time an excellent score after side stepping a number of Eire Óg defenders. Another 5 minutes passed before Aiden  scored his third of a day this time from a free.  Scores were at a premium due to the high winds of storm Ashley  with  Killian Mc Adam and Aodhan Brennan  kicking the remaining scores of the half to leave the half time score Drumhowan 0-6 Eire Óg 0-2

Aodhán Brennan opened the scoring in the 2nd half after he capitalised from an Eire Óg mistake to score the game’s first  goal to leave  7 in it.  The game got a little scrappy and  it was another 7 minutes before goalkeeper James Morrow scored his 2nd point from a 45.  Eire Óg then hit another free this time from a Michael Tierney free after Conor Curran received a black card.  Kevin Mooney kicked his first point of the day to  leave 6  in it after 12 minutes gone in the half.  Eire Óg Sub Leon Mc Cabe  then kicked the next 2 points to reduce the difference to 4.  As the wind increased the rate of scoring greatly reduced and it was another 15 minutes  and injury time before Tom Doherty opened his scoring to leave 5 in it.  It felt as if was Drumhowan’s day  but Eire Óg  had other ideas  with  a point from Jamie Mc Carey  and a goal from  Cian Mc Aree  within a minute  to leave the minimum in it. However from the resulting kick out Drumhowan broke down the field  and sub Jospeh Duffy scored  Drumhowan’s 2nd goal with the last kick of the game  to leave the full time score Drumhowan 2-8 Eire Óg 1-7.  Before the presentation of the Liam Stirrat Cup  Daragh Mc Elearney  was announced as man of the match.  Patrick Quinn then received the Liam Stirrat Cup, Drumhowan’s first time after receiving the Mc Caldin Shield twice and the Packie Boylan 4 times.
