Drumhowan GAA are pleased to announce that they have been awarded Gold Healthy Club Status by the GAA Community and Health Department. This is for the years 2022 and 2023 after the Club was first awarded Healthy Club Status in 2021. The club’s policies, partners, activities and environment are aligned with supporting the holistic health of our members and community. The gold award status is the highest standard of healthy club and we are the first group of clubs to receive it.
Activities the club have partaken in the last two years often in conjunction with the Community Group are Ireland Lights Up, Female Rounders and Steps Challenges in the Physical Activity Pillar. In the Mental Fitness section there was a 3 part session on Suicide Awareness and Prevention while the U15 and U17 squads had a Resilience Talk in conjunction with LA – 519. In the Healthy Eating Section – the Cubs and Academy Section of the Club tuck into a Healthy Fruit Platter after every session. In the Substance Use and Gambling Awareness Section – policies have been implemented and the Club has become a smoke and vape free campus. In community development in conjunction with the community group defib training has been organised and finally in green clubs and sustainability new trees, including apple trees have been planted in our biodiversity area. We’ve implemented and activated a ‘no herbicide/pesticide policy’. We’re installing water harvesting with a grant aid of 2k from SSE. LED Lightning has been installed throughout the Centre and efforts have been made to stop the erosion of the river.
Healthy Club Officer Noel Duffy was delighted on receiving the award and would like to thank the sub committee of Lorraine O’ Donnell, Lorraine Hanratty, Annamarie Goodman and Arno Aventin who made this all possible over the last 2 years.
The club will receive their award on Tuesday 17th October 2023 in Tyrone GAA Centre, Garvaghey.
