St Patrick’s 3-12 Toome (Clan na Gael) 0-14
30/7/2019
Mother Nature had her way on Tuesday evening prior to throw-in for the Mallon’s Sausages U17 Division 2 Finals in Aughnamullen and Doohamlet as a deluge of rain plus thunder and lightening of almost epic proportions hit the region.Following a wet warm up in Doohamlet the rain clouds cleared somewhat and the action began!
5 of Tuesday’s players Dara McCann, Aodhán Brennan, Gerard Quinn, Conor Mc Kernan and Jason Irwin had all togged out for Monaghan U17s on Sunday and were now proudly representing their clubs St Patrick’s and Toome. (Clan na Gael)
Toome opened strong with a very energetic display as on form Monaghan U17 and Toome captain Jason Irwin tapped over 0-5 before St. Patrick’s eventually got on the scoreboard in the 17th minute. Within a dramatic 2 minute spell St Patrick’s had levelled matters with a point each from Dara McCann and Aodhan Brennan along with a Joseph Bardsley goal the sides were all square on Toome 0-5 St Pat’s 1-02.. In all the sides were level three times before the interval with Pat’s Aodhan Brennan and Thomas Keenan scoring the equalisers at one end while at the other end Jason Irwin added 3 more points to his personal tally of 0-8 pushing his side ahead by a point on the halftime whistle. Jason, accurate from all positions was a pleasure to watch putting on a one man show as Toome’s only scorer in the first half.
After the restart St Patrick’s came out with all guns blazing and within the 1st minute had added 2 points to their tally off the boots of Aodhan Brennan and Julius Sniausksta. Shell shocked Toome were fighting hard but were held scoreless by Pat’s for 19 minutes as James McAdam, Julius Sniausksta and Dara McCann were all on target putting Pat’s up 2-10 to 0-8. The first half master scorer Jason Irwin had to dig deep to eventually get his scoring mojo back again by sending over Toome’s first point in the 19th minute which staged somewhat of a comeback for his side but a big performance would be needed to overcome St Pat’s dominance. And come back they did as more scorers got on the scoreboard for Toome. Andrew Connolly, Jason Irwin, Liam Murphy,Conor McKenna kept chipping away at St Pat’s lead and had reduced it to 4 points in the 26th minute. A missed penalty opportunity by Toome in the 27th minute could have been a massive turning point but instead St Patrick’s once again took control finishing out the game on a scoreline of St Patrick’s 3-12 to Toome 0-14. Both teams are to be congratulated on such a super game of football in what could only be described as far from ideal conditions. Thanks to host club Doohamlet which had everything organised , even the umbrellas.
