2015 – the year gone by may not have been the most memorable in the club’s history but it still is a year that had many  highlights. The year began with David Millar receiving the 2014 Junior Player of the Year a just reward for the effort for the captain of the 2014 Championship winning team. The Scór na nÓg Instrumental Group made it to the All Ireland Final once again for the third year in a row. However this time they didn’t succeed in their attempt to win a recording breaking 3 in a row All Ireland Titles.  They were pipped to the post by the Lixnaw, from Kerry. It was also a year that had it sadness when a former senior player from this millennium Brendan Duffy lost his battle with life after a long fight at the tender age of 37. Then in July his cousin Enda Duffy as part of the Monaghan Senior Squad became the first Drumhowan player in win an Ulster Senior Championship medal.  While the U12 Squad was the only team to win a county title in 2015 it must be remembered that all squads from U12 to senior competed in Division 2 or above – something that doesn’t happen every year in Drumhowan.

Senior Team

After winning the Championship in 2014 the Senior Team were promoted to Intermediate ranks. They found the going tough and while they kept going to the end they were relegated on the last day of the season with an away defeat to Emyvale. However apart from some heavy defeats to Carrick in the league and championship the games against all other opposition were a much closer affair. In fact 5 of the 11 league points came from the teams that finished 2-4 in the league. For the record in the league 5 games were won, there was one draw and 12 ended in defeat. In the championship the team suffered a heavy defeat to Carrick  in Inniskeen while 6 days later at the same venue the club were out of the championship after suffering a 2-10 to 1-15 defeat to Tyholland.  Manager this year was Kevin Carragher while the team was trained by Martin Woods.

Junior B

The Junior Bs this year had the management team of Séamus Duffy, Dermot Mc Dermott and Pat Duffy (red). In their Reserve League Division 2A league campaign they played 10 games gaining two victories over Éire Óg and Rockorry, a draw with Seán Mc Dermotts and the other seven ended in defeat. Due to a better score difference over the two games with Éire Óg the club remain in the same division for 2016. In the Crawley Cup Championship they were defeated by Killanny by 2-15 to 3-9  in the Quarter Final.

Minors

The minors this year were once again under the St Patrick’s name and the management team of Martin Duffy, Gavin Sheridan, Colm Duffy and Enda Monaghan. Big things were expected of this team after winning the U16 Div 1 Double in 2013. However they didn’t live up to expectations losing to Donaghmoyne in the Championship Semi Final  3-6 to  2-14 and failed to make the Cup League final after losing to Magheracloone in the last league game.  For the record in the Division1 league campaign there were 5 victories, 2 games lost and 1 game wasn’t fulfilled. In the League Cup games they beat Truagh and Seán Mc Dermotts whilst they lost to Donaghmoyne and Magheracloone.

U16s

The U16s under the St. Patrick’s team played their games in Ballybay and were under the management team of Francis Mc Mahon, Tom Mc Skeane and Damien Caraher. In the Championship quarter final they suffered a heavy defeat to Truagh. In the division 1 league campaign they played 7 games but only had two victories over Donaghmoyne and Monaghan Harps. This meant that after the exam break they played in the Division 1 Shield. Here after 3 games with victories once again over the Harps and Donaghmoyne they reached the Shield Final against Inniskeen but once again Inniskeen were victorious by 4-12 to 1-7.

U14s

The U14s found the Division 2 Campaign difficult suffering a 3-12 to 2-3 defeat to Emyvale in the championship. They only had one victory in the league early in the season to Emyvale and due to injuries and lack of numbers at times, couldn’t manage another win and lost to Truagh in their shield semi final to bring their league campaign to a close. The team was managed by the trio of Anthony Brennan, Seán Smyth and Barry Tomany.

U12s

The U12 made a good start to the year remaining undefeated throughout the spring league defeating Cremartin on finals day. This meant they were placed in Division 2. In the league campaign of 5 games they only had 1 victory over Toome which they then defeated again in the shield semi final. This led to the shield final against Truagh which took place in Clontibret on Thursday 7th August.FT Score Drumhowan 5-10 Truagh 2-11

In this game Truagh raced into a 2 point lead and Drumhowan were slow to get off the mark. It wasn’t until the 7th minute that they entered the scoring market and they did so with a bang when the captain and Legacurry man James Mc Adam scored a goal. This was followed up with another 2 minutes by full forward Ciaran Keenan. Drumhowan had found their rhythm and led from that point on. Midfielder Eimear Quinn then got in on the scoring with a point followed by a point from Daire Sheridan. Truagh then knocked one back but James Mc Adam was having none of it knocking over a 45 with his trusty left peg to leave the score13 minutes in Drumhowan 2 – 3 Truagh 0-3 Truagh pulled a point back but then the killer blow came when the man with Mayo blood Caolán Reilly scored the team’s third goal. With 5 minutes left the flamed hair Ciarán Keenan scored Drumhowan’s final point of the half to leave the Half Time Score Drumhowan 3-4 Truagh 0-5.

The 2nd third gave the opportunity for the rest of the 2 squads to shine and they provided the large crowd in attendance with great entertainment and also left them in the knowledge with the skill on view that both clubs future is secure.

In the final third Drumhowan were quick off the mark with a Dáire point. It was throughout this period that the Drumhowan’s defenders were tested to the full with Truagh attacking with full force. The defenders of Orlaith Brennan, Tristan Duffy, Jonathan Lavelle and Ruadhán Curran played out of their skins with some serious defending taking place – with a number of goal line clearances. Truagh got the next few scores before another Daire Sheridan point followed closely by the captain James Mc Adam.

Then in what was probably the goal of the game Dáire Sheridan having his best game of season scored a screamer of a goal from 30 meters out. Truagh replied with one of their own almost immediately but Daire Sheridan scored his 4th point of the game laid on by the blond bombshell David Barry who worked hard throughout. Truagh then got their 2nd goal of the game after some hard pressure. This forced goalie Mark Tomany to slow the game down. Mark placed his kickouts well throughout the game and these led to many of Drumhowan scores. With 7 minutes left captain James moved up a gear to get past his marker and rifle the ball to the net for the game’s final goal and his second. 3 minutes later Caolan Reilly raced up the right to score his first point of the game. By this point Drumhowan had introduced their first sub Tom Doherty who was closely followed into the fray by the Carrickatee forward Killian Mc Adam. Then with a minute left James Mc Adam on the left wing with his left foot scored a fitting final point to leave the full time score Drumhowan 5-10 Truagh 2 -11 James was then presented the Mullyash Cup by County Children’s officer and fellow Drumhowan man John Mc Ardle. This was only the 2nd time in the club’s history that a U12 cup was won at Div 2 Level – you had to go back to 1994 when the Conlon Cup was captured.(Div 1 at that stage was a 12 team division with 2 Cups)
