GORMLEY U PVC MONAGHAN SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP.

Monaghan Harps 1-12, Drumhowan 3-4.

Monaghan Harps are through to the next round of the senior championship but they had to endure a nervous finish to their meeting with Drumhowan in Clontibret yesterday before booking their place against Truagh in round 3.

Monaghan Harps started well and led by 1-7 to 0-1 after twenty minutes but Drumhowan then rammed in two goals in quick succession the first from a James McElroy penalty and the second by Colm Lambe on the half hour to leave just four points in it at the break, Monaghan Harps 1-8, Drumhowan 2-1.

The standard of play deteriorated somewhat in the second half with mistakes the order of the day with the result that scores were at a premium. Entering the final five minutes Monaghan Harps looked safe with a five points lead but Drumhowan struck for a third goal through veteran Stephen McGinnity to leave the Harps hanging on desperately. The winners finished the game with 13 players, Dean Fanning, straight red card and Stephen McAleer, second yellow both sent off in the final minutes.
